on-line diary tells of my adventures while bird watching. Most of my
birding takes place at the nearby Montlake Fill (now known as the
Union Bay Natural Area), but I also manage to go farther afield on the

The On-line Monograph of the
Lories and Lorikeets (formerly known as the LoryFAQ: answers to
Frequently Asked Questions about Lories and Lorikeets). Originally
written in January 1994 to appear on a monthly basis on the newsgroup
rec.pets.birds, this AWARD-WINNING document was updated and rewritten
several times [last update 26 August 2000]. I wrote and linked more
local webpages to this document and added more figures and photographs,
including some pictures of lories that I raised and a wav file of a talking
rainbow lory.

Washington State University (the cross-state rival of my own university, the University of Washington) is conducting research into the incidence and effects upon lories of the dreaded virus, Psittacine Feather and Beak Disease (PBFD). The
Hawk-headed Parrot FAQ
This AWARD WINNING document is based upon many years of personal experience
with keeping and breeding hawk-headed parrots. This article was
translated and republished in the March 2000 issue of Svensk
Fagelhobby under the title of "Svar Pa Vanligt Forekommende
Fragor om Kragpapegoja." [Updated: 18 May 2000].
The Psittacosis FAQ. I wrote this AWARD WINNING document because, in 1991, I had the unpleasant experience of purchasing -- sight unseen -- a pair of birds that had an active case of chlamydiosis. When they arrived at the airport, I realized that they were desperately ill, yet I would not learn what they were suffering from until the middle of the following week. Needless to say, I could write a book about the entire experience. However, the most useful method of dealing with this unpleasant event was to learn about this disease and provide that information to other people, so hopefully, none of you will repeat my experiences. (Please note that I am NOT a veterinarian and, even if I were a veterinarian, I would never, ever diagnose a bird over the internet!) [Updated: 18 February 2003].

Spring 2002:
Birdsong: It's more than just music to your
ears. This time, I had a 625 word limit for this, my favorite story
that I've written for this series. Includes sound files provided by my
friends! This is probably the last story I will write for the Biology
Department newsletter because I am leaving this autumn to accept a
postdoctoral fellowship in New York City [15 March 2002].
Winter 2002:
It's all in the Olfactory Pits: Going Home Makes Scents
to a Salmon. This time, I had a 625 word limit for this story, which is
the cover story for the Biology Department newsletter [15 December 2001].
Autumn 2001:
Catching Dinner on the fly; The Night is Alive with
the Sound of Echoes. Again, my word limit is 600 words, although
the Biology Department gives me a few extra words over that limit.

Spring 2001:
30,000 Facets Give Dragonflies a Different
Perspective: The Big Compound Eye in the Sky. My word limit for this
article was 600 words, and it appears in the Spring 2001 Biology Department
newsletter. [11 April 2001]
Winter 2001:
Eats Like Godzilla, Sleeps Like The Mummy.
My word limit was increased once more. I have 600 words for this story,
which appeared in winter issue of the Biology Department newsletter. As an
added feature on this webbed version, I have included a wonderful hummingbird
"trailer" that follows your cursor around the screen, and images were provided
by some of my "bird pals." [20 December 2000].
Autumn 2000:
Take a Peek at Nature's Website: Spiders Spin
Steely Silken Splendor. My word limit was increased to 500 words for
this story, which appeared on the front page of the newsletter! [20
September 2000]
Spring 2000:
Bumblebees pack a sonic buzz. I was given a
400-word column in the Biology Department newsletter, yet despite of
having a stack of 150 exams to grade at the same time, I managed
to meet the deadline one week later with this little story! [25 April
2000]
Why Do Birds Sing in the Autumn? This story was published under my
pen-name and appears in the November 2000 E-zine, Winged Wisdom.

article that I wrote for my Audubon Society Master Birder's Class.

I often visit the interactive lory exhibit located at the Point Defiance
Zoo in Tacoma, Washington. I have been collecting photographs from my

San Juan Islands PhotoEssay. I stayed in the
San Juan Islands during June and July of 1995 while I learned some new
research techniques. Luckily, I had a few opportunities to go bird- and
whale-watching, and I indulged myself in photography along the way.

Lories email list. The lories email list is the "grand dame" of them
all; it was the first email list that was devoted exclusively to the lories
and their allies, the fig and hanging parrots. The list discusses a wide
variety of topics ranging from feeding your pet lory to lory research and
