Articles Written Specifically for Web Publication;
on-line diary tells of my adventures while bird watching. Most of my
birding takes place at the nearby Montlake Fill (now known as the
Union Bay Natural Area), but I also manage to go farther afield on the
weekends! [last update 04 December 2000].
The On-line Monograph of the
Lories and Lorikeets (formerly known as the LoryFAQ: answers to
Frequently Asked Questions about Lories and Lorikeets). Originally
written in January 1994 to appear on a monthly basis on the newsgroup
rec.pets.birds, this AWARD-WINNING document was updated and rewritten
several times [last update 26 August 2000]. I wrote and linked more
local webpages to this document and added more figures and photographs,
including some pictures of lories that I raised and a wav file of a talking
rainbow lory.
My well-received Review of All Lory Books Ever Written, including my lory book ratings system. [Updated: 14 September 2000]
My tried-and-true home-made Lory Food Recipe that you, too, can use to feed your lory. [Updated: 24 July 1999]
A listing of all good Commercially-prepared Lory Foods that are available in the United States, along with links to their webpages. [Updated: 5 August 1999]
A Black-capped Lory subspecies identifier (image only at this time) to help you determine which subspecies your Black-capped lory belongs to! [this image appears here by request of Lori Journaal Internationaal, 11 April 2000].
Washington State University (the cross-state rival of my own university, the University of Washington) is conducting research into the incidence and effects upon lories of the dreaded virus, Psittacine Feather and Beak Disease (PBFD). I wrote a webpage to help publicize their efforts to gather information about PBFD in lories from the public. [1 December 1999]
And, last but not least, a simple Methodology for House-training your pet lory. [Updated: 24 July 1999]
The
Hawk-headed Parrot FAQ
This AWARD WINNING document is based upon many years of personal experience
with keeping and breeding hawk-headed parrots. This article was
translated and republished in the March 2000 issue of Svensk
Fagelhobby under the title of "Svar Pa Vanligt Forekommende
Fragor om Kragpapegoja." [Updated: 18 May 2000].
The Psittacosis FAQ. I wrote this AWARD WINNING document because, in 1991, I had the unpleasant experience of purchasing -- sight unseen -- a pair of birds that had an active case of chlamydiosis. When they arrived at the airport, I realized that they were desperately ill, yet I would not learn what they were suffering from until the middle of the following week. Needless to say, I could write a book about the entire experience. However, the most useful method of dealing with this unpleasant event was to learn about this disease and provide that information to other people, so hopefully, none of you will repeat my experiences. (Please note that I am NOT a veterinarian and, even if I were a veterinarian, I would never, ever diagnose a bird over the internet!) [Updated: 18 February 2003].
Winter 2002:
It's all in the Olfactory Pits: Going Home Makes Scents
to a Salmon. This time, I had a 625 word limit for this story, which is
the cover story for the Biology Department newsletter [15 December 2001].
Why Do Birds Sing in the Autumn? This story was published under my
pen-name and appears in the November 2000 E-zine, Winged Wisdom.
This story includes pictures and sound files provided by my friends!
Schemochromes:
The Physics of Why Bird Feathers are Blue. This is a draft of an
article that I wrote for my Audubon Society Master Birder's Class.
I will re-write it in the future, so comments are welcome, of course.
Includes a few pictures. [1 March 2000].
My
Review of Rosemary Low's Encyclopedia of
the Lories was written by request and published in the January
1999 issue of Lori Journaal Internationaal, by the Oklahoma
Avicultural Society (Tulsa) and also appears on my webpage entitled,
"A Review of all Lory Books Ever Published."
The bird flu and you was
written by request and published by the Oklahoma Avicultural Society

"webbed" here.
The Lory Lovers'

January 1998 E-zine, Winged Wisdom.
Photographic Essays;
Interactive Lory Exhibit Photoessay.
I often visit the interactive lory exhibit located at the Point Defiance
Zoo in Tacoma, Washington. I have been collecting photographs from my
many visits so I can share them with you here, which will hopefully be
SOON! [My most recent visit was 10 July 2001].
San Juan Islands PhotoEssay. I stayed in the
San Juan Islands during June and July of 1995 while I learned some new
research techniques. Luckily, I had a few opportunities to go bird- and
whale-watching, and I indulged myself in photography along the way.
[Last update 28 September 1996].
A PhotoEssay
of Tokyo, Japan. I work here with several
collaborators and, because I always carried my camera with me, I took
plenty of pictures while I was exploring the city. [Final update 5
October 1996].
Miscellaneous Stuff:
:
Public speaking activities: Are you looking for
a speaker for your group or organization? I am available on a limited basis
to speak to your group or organization about a wide variety of bird-related
topics. Fees negotiable. [Last Update 15 November 2003].
Lories email list. The lories email list is the "grand dame" of them
all; it was the first email list that was devoted exclusively to the lories
and their allies, the fig and hanging parrots. The list discusses a wide
variety of topics ranging from feeding your pet lory to lory research and
conservation issues. [Last update: 15 November 2003]
Biographical Note of me as a graduate student. For those of you who are
wondering how I managed to get where I am now, maybe my personal webpage
holds a few clues? [Last update 22 November 2002].
But seriously ... all articles, essays, and photographs presented on this website are original works by the author, unless specifically noted otherwise, and are fully protected by copyright law. Thus, these works cannot appear in any other location, in whole or in part, without written permission from the author. Brief quotations are permitted BUT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE PROPER CITATIONS! In an attempt to learn HTML, this webpage was written the old-fashioned way by the author.
